Afterschool STEM Club

For students in grades K-8th


Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 pm

Fall Semester: October 13-December 17, 2020

Spend time with Explora exhibits, do STEAM activities, and get moving by spending time outside.

In-person classes will meet all CDC, NMDOH, and CYFD guidelines, with a limited number of students per classroom. All students and staff must wear masks and pass a daily COVID-19 screening.

Class schedule

Register for one or more sessions. Each week is a different topic:

  • Week of November 2: Engineering Gravity
  • Week of November 9: Art and Science

  • Week of December 7: Engineering Gravity
  • Week of December 14: Charges, Currents, and Circuits

Explora’s Camps & Programs

Explora educators develop activities with children’s developmental levels in mind. Your children will have the opportunity to learn from, and work with older and younger peers and make new friends.

Registration/Information

  • You can register online, by phone, or download and mail/fax the completed registration form.
  • Please have the following available when you register: emergency contact name and phone numbers; name of alternate adults who can pick up the child; child’s medications, dosages, and physician’s name; child’s insurance information, as well as any allergy or special needs information for your child.

Cancellation Policy

  • If a cancellation is received more than 5 business days before the camp, a refund will be issued for the amount minus a 15% administrative fee.
  • Cancellations received 5 business days or fewer before the camp will not be refunded.
  • Full fees will be refunded if Explora cancels a program

Under the Sun

Class 1

Test different sunscreens to find out which one is the best for blocking the effects of the sun. Test the effect of the sun on UV beads and create your own photographic image using sunlight.

Leaves Everywhere

Class 2

Leaves give us oxygen, shelter, and shade. They can even give us food! Explore all the beautiful and wonderful things leaves have to offer!

Levers, Pulleys, and Ramps

Class 3

Explore simple machines and discover how they can make work easier. Find out where simple machines are used and create a chain reaction using levers, pulleys and ramps.

What’s in a Fingerprint?

Class 4

Explore your fingerprints and look at your hair under microscopes to find out what makes you unique. Be a forensic scientist as you investigate “who did it” by comparing the evidence!

Drawing Nature

Class 5

Become a scientific illustrator as you use grids, symmetry, and more to draw your favorite animals and plants. Investigate how science and art work together as you use magnifying glasses to examine insects and plants, and then use your powers of observation to inspire your illustrations.

Magnetic Filing

Class 6

Experiment with the powers of magnets as you try to repel and attract different materials. Explore magnetic pendulums, use a magnet to race a car, and draw with iron filings.

Catch a Wave

Class 7

Catch a sound wave! Students experiment with vibrations to learn how sound is produced and how it travels. Make your own musical instrument to take home.

Colors on the Move

Class 8

How does mixing colored light compare with mixing different colors of paint together? Explore color mixing as you test a variety of materials and mediums to find out which colors mix together and which colors do not. Create new colors, dissect a marker to find the hidden colors inside and more.
