In partnership with New Mexico Autism Society, Explora is offering sensory-friendly hours. Regular admission fees apply. For more information about these extra hours call 505-224-8300.

During these sensory-friendly hours, individuals and families can enjoy a less sensory-stimulating visit.

  • Sensory-Friendly Entrance: an entrance that bypasses the store and admissions desk.
  • Sensory Spaces: quiet, low-light rooms upstairs and downstairs available to take a break from the exhibit floor.
  • Museum Toolkits: resources co-developed with NM Autism Society, like social stories, fidgets, visual schedules, and more.

Explora offers several sensory-friendly tools. Items will be available on a table near the entrance during sensory-friendly hours and at the admissions desks during general admission hours.

autismEXPLORA-tions camps for children with autism and their peers

May 28-June 1

Each of the three camps below is a week-long camp offered Monday, May 28 – Friday, June 1.
Hours vary by day, see schedule below:

  • Monday, 1-4pm.
  • Tuesday-Thursday, 8:15am-2pm.
  • Friday, 9am-12pm (camp will meet at an off-site location)

Camp for Children with Autism
Ages 5-7

EXPLORA-tions – Creepy Crawlies: Investigate dirt and the creepy crawly things we find in it. Experiment with different types of soils and discover red wigglers, snails, mealworms, and much more.

Camp for Children with Autism
Ages 7-10

EXPLORA-tions – Windy 500: Design a wind-powered car that goes the distance! Use cardboard, tubing, dowels, plastic sheets, and more to build your own car, and test variables to refine your design.

Companion Camp for Siblings & Friends of Children with Autism
K-4th grade

Wide World of STEAM:  Discover the excitement of investigation and inquiry as we explore a wide range of science, technology, engineering, art, and math challenges.

Fee for camps for children with autism and their peers:

  • Explora members: $100 per camper
  • Non-members: $115 per camper

A separate application process is being used for camps the week of May 28-June 1. Please contact Susan Leung, Explora’s Camp Manager, at campcoordinator@explora.us or 505-224-8381 for more information and the application materials.

Sensory-friendly hours and tools are offered in partnership with NM Autism Society with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and United Way of Central New Mexico.

EXPLORA-tions Camp

Innovative camps for children with autism spectrum disorder, providing a safe, supportive, and fun environment to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Offered in partnership between Explora and the New Mexico Autism Society.

Explorations Sensory Friendly Camp

Vernal Holiday: Friday, April 10, 2020, 9am-2pm

Full-day camp for ages 4-7 and 8-12

Brick by Brick What makes a structure strong? Come explore a variety of materials and designs to construct different types of structures.

Cost per child: $90 ($75 for members)


Summer Camp: May 26–29, 2020, 9am-2pm

Full-day camp for ages 4-7 and 8-12

Build It Become builders and architects as you experiment with construction. Test a variety of shapes and materials for strength and stability, then apply your knowledge to build a tower, construct a bridge, or design a building.

Cost per 4-day camp per child: $225 ($200 for members)

Before Camp Meet and Greet: May 25, 2019 from 4-5pm.

May 27-31, 2019, 12-4pm (Mon), 9am-2pm (Tues-Fri)

Full-week camp

Ages 4-7: On a RollExperiment with rolling and twirling, looping and whirling. Test which shapes roll the best, and create a roller coaster for marbles.

Cost: $115 ($100 for members)
*This Camp is offered at a reduced fee as families commit to provide feedback before, during, and after the camp session to help us with future planning.

Ages 8-12: Top of Your GameWhat makes a game fun? Level up and play with game design through building arcade-style games, coding, game interfaces, and more!

Cost: $115 ($100 for members)

Cost per Camper – $20 for members $30 for non members

Engineering Heroes

Ages 8-12

Participants will become builders and architects, as they experiment with construction and destruction. They will test a variety of materials and strategies for strength and stability and test their structures against some detrimental disasters.
Half Day Camp –  
January 21, 2019 (choose AM or PM)
Times –
9am-12pm or 1-4pm.


Before Camp Meet and Greet: Parent/Guardian and campers are invited to come meet your Explora educators, find your camp classroom, and get to know other campers. January 19, 2019 from 4pm – 6pm. Siblings are also welcome to attend.

Thinking about enrolling for EXPLORA-tions Camp? Please consider the following.

  • Age grouping refers to the child’s age at the time of camp.
  • Camper is able to use bathrooms independently.
  • Camper behaviors must be manageable within the scope of Explora programming (Explora staff is not crisis prevention trained).
  • Camper must be exempt from any extreme health-care conditions or needs.
  • Meet and Greet sessions are recommended to ease nerves and anxiety before camp day.

Explora is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and all purchases at our store are always tax-free. Proceeds from your purchases at Ideas, the store at Explora, help fund our programs and exhibits.
