Exploring career pathways occurs in many different ways at X Studio. One of these is the monthly Friday evening Teen Science Café, where teens meet professionals, explore new topics, and learn about various careers. This fall, the series has focused on health-related pathways.
At our August Teen Science Café, X Studio hosted healthcare professionals from UNM Hospital to share their career journeys with 15 teens and provide them with hands-on experience with medical equipment. Daniel Smith, a nurse at UNMH`s Catheterization Lab, showed off the lead-lined gear he wears during procedures to protect himself from radiation exposure. Dr. Michael Russo of UNMH`s Emergency Medical Services demonstrated a portable ultrasound machine, and a few students got a close-up view of their own hearts! Dr. Simone Miller and medical student Kelsey Montoya taught teens how to use a tourniquet properly. The teens were shocked by how tight a tourniquet should be — if you can feel a pulse, it`s not tight enough!
At our September Teen Science Café, X Studio welcomed Dr. Valerie Romero-Leggott, MD, and Dr. Jennifer Ortega, PharmD, along with several pharmacy and medical students, to share their education and career journeys. The pharmacy students, led by Dr. Ortega, made lip balm with the teens, while the medical students, led by Dr. Romero-Leggott, taught students how to suture. The teens were excited to practice real medical skills. One student was surprised to find out how steady her hands were when performing a delicate task like suturing; she said she felt much more confident after trying it.

During this time, attendance will be limited, lights and sounds will be reduced, and a calming space will be available for sensory breaks. Sensory kits with headphones, fidget objects, timers, and more will be on hand to support your visit.
This event is presented in partnership with Proud Moments ABA and is included with regular admission.
