With a new school year approaching, we wanted to share where one Explora alum is headed next!
Aniel has been part of the Explora community for several years, participating in programs including the Directed Energy Summer Internship and the AFRL STEM Scholars Summer Camp. When he first joined the DE Internship two summers ago, he was the youngest participant at just 16. Over time, he found his footing, his confidence, and his passion for building things.
He describes Explora as "a place where good things happen." And when we asked if he`d come back to inspire the next generation of young makers and thinkers, he didn`t hesitate: "Of course, because Explora is my home."
This fall, Aniel heads to the University of New Mexico to study mechanical engineering on an academic scholarship. We`re so glad his story is part of ours!
Our Storyteller Series continues! Explora partners with Ms. Marie Booth`s MESA class at East Mountain High School, where students interview local STEM professionals about their journeys.
This week: Kathleen Oolman, a Quantum Tech Physicist. She earned her undergraduate degree in math and physics from the University of Wyoming, then went on to complete a Ph.D. in Experimental Physics from the University of Illinois.
Today, her work involves studying extremely small-scale physics, from photons and atoms to semiconductors and light, with a focus on how semiconductors can influence behavior at the quantum level. Outside the lab, she`s just as likely to be found rock climbing or running. As she puts it: "I embrace change, understanding passion makes things worthwhile."
Teen Science Cafe: The Future of Aerospace
This month, we`re excited to welcome professionals from Boeing to talk with teens about where aerospace science is headed. Join us Friday, July 31, from 6 to 7:30 pm for a career talk, hands-on activities, and pizza!

Every party includes a private room, a party host, a hands-on science activity, and all-day museum access for your guests.
Choose from activities for every age: color mixing and bubbling potions for younger kids, circuits, static electricity, and liquid nitrogen ice cream for ages 6 and up. We also offer sensory-friendly parties in a private, relaxed space with adjusted lighting and accommodating activities.

With the support of a three-year grant from United Way of North Central New Mexico, Explora provided hands-on STEAM programs for early childhood classrooms at the APS McKinney-Vento and Foster Care Program. The program supports families who are experiencing homelessness.
Cristal Wilson, Director, wrote, "One of the most significant impacts we observed was exposure. Students participated in experiences that introduced them to concepts, careers, and possibilities beyond what they regularly encounter in their homes and communities. We saw students begin to imagine futures that extended beyond the examples they currently see modeled around them. During and after activities, students talked about becoming scientists. By engaging students in curiosity and thinking for themselves, Explora helped our young people see themselves as learners, problem-solvers, and future contributors to their communities. We are grateful for this partnership and the role it plays for students who might not otherwise have access to these enriching experiences."
