Crafternoon: DIY Patches
This summer, 30 middle and high school students spent a week developing coding skills through several different coding environments using a Raspberry Pi. Not a raspberry pie, but a Raspberry Pi, a computer about the size of a credit card that opened the door to hands-on exploration of coding, electronics, and machine learning.
Students coded their own games and used breadboards, simple tools for building and testing electronic circuits, to connect the Raspberry Pi’s GPIO pins. These pins allow the Raspberry Pi to send and receive signals from electronic components like LEDs, switches, and servos, giving students the chance to see their code come to life. High school students took their learning a step further by creating their own machine learning models. Students were then able to take their Raspberry Pi home with them to continue building on the skills they developed.
“I hope to major in engineering in college! This Raspberry Pi is going to allow me to work on my own personal projects. That will teach me new skills and also add them to my portfolio."

Folks gathered in Grandma`s Casita this past Saturday with NMPBS for a very special Daniel Tiger Story Time, where guests designed their own Daniel Tiger masks and wrote thank-you cards to reflect on self-worth, connection, and kindness.
Through creativity and gratitude, families practiced skills that strengthen empathy and community while exploring what the Science of Kindness means to them!
We’re so grateful to NMPBS for joining us in Grandma’s Casita once again and helping spread a little more kindness in our community! 💛

Renewable Energy: Water Power Education Workshop
Calling all middle and high school educators, librarians, and out-of-school time providers!
Join us September 3 from 5–7 pm for an in-person workshop exploring clean renewable energy from waves, tides, and currents. Roll up your sleeves and try hands-on activities you can bring back to your classroom, with connections to math and science standards.
You’ll also learn about local research as you explore clean renewable energy!⚡️

In July, Explora hosted 22 high school students from across the country for the AFRL STEM Scholars Program, a hands-on experience focused on STEM skills, careers, and professional development. Students learned Python programming and applied it to machine learning with an instructor from New Mexico Tech, visited local STEM facilities, connected with STEM professionals from New Space, and developed career skills through résumé building and professional headshots.
The impact of the program continued beyond the summer experience. Participant Krish used the Python skills he learned at camp to simulate a research paper on magnetohydrodynamic pumps using Ubuntu. He also used Explora’s 3-D printers to build an apparatus for his physical experiment and plans to submit his research for publication. “The code I learned helped, but the 3-D printers that were available at Explora helped me build the apparatus for my physical experiment,” Krish shared. “It was an unforgettable experience.” His experience highlights how AFRL STEM Scholars gives students practical skills and resources they can apply to real-world STEM research and future careers.
