In July, Explora welcomed 37 teens to Teen Science Café for an evening exploring the science and real-world applications of laser technology. We were excited to welcome eight professionals from Boeing’s laser and electro-optical team, who shared their expertise and allowed teens to learn directly from STEM professionals working here in New Mexico.
The evening combined conversation with hands-on exploration as teens learned about laser alignment and interferometry, a technique that uses lasers to make incredibly precise measurements. They also explored image relay and laser tracking, discovering how these technologies are used in everything from cameras and telescopes to aircraft and manufacturing.
Boeing team members were impressed by the teens’ curiosity and thoughtful questions, including one teen who was able to identify the purpose of one of the demonstrations on their own.
We are grateful to Boeing for sharing their time, knowledge, and enthusiasm with our teens and for their continued partnership with Explora. Their team shared that they greatly enjoyed the experience and look forward to future opportunities to engage with our community.
Thank you, Boeing, for helping our teens see where their curiosity and interest in STEM can take them!

This summer, 30 middle and high school students spent a week developing coding skills through several different coding environments using a Raspberry Pi. Not a raspberry pie, but a Raspberry Pi, a computer about the size of a credit card that opened the door to hands-on exploration of coding, electronics, and machine learning.
Students coded their own games and used breadboards, simple tools for building and testing electronic circuits, to connect the Raspberry Pi’s GPIO pins. These pins allow the Raspberry Pi to send and receive signals from electronic components like LEDs, switches, and servos, giving students the chance to see their code come to life. High school students took their learning a step further by creating their own machine learning models. Students were then able to take their Raspberry Pi home with them to continue building on the skills they developed.
“I hope to major in engineering in college! This Raspberry Pi is going to allow me to work on my own personal projects. That will teach me new skills and also add them to my portfolio."
Thank you to VanDyke Software for their generous support of this summer camp!
