Home School Explorations Series

For 3rd–5th graders (ages 8–11 years), at Explora

Spring Semester: January 29 - Apr 23, 2024

Be curious, discover, experiment!

Overview:

Explora’s Home School Explorations Series offers your child a semester of weekly, 75 minute-long experiential science, technology, and art programs. Each Exploration is facilitated by Explora educators. These are 75 minute-long, materials-rich classes that actively engage every child in inquiry activities. In these classes, children will make discoveries in science, technology, engineering, art, and math through questioning, experiencing, and investigating. Children will be encouraged to build their own knowledge and cultivate skills such as observation, creativity, critical thinking, cooperative learning, communication, and innovation as they explore a different topic each week. Class topics change each semester.

Spring 2024 Explorations Schedule

Spring 2024 Explorations Schedule

January 29 - Apr 23, 2024

Density Liquid Layers

MON Jan 29 / TUES Jan 30

Delve into density: the property of matter that determines whether objects float or sink! Compare the densities of salt solutions and a variety of liquids, and make a submarine that both sinks and floats.

Kaleidoscope Crazed

MON Feb 5/TUES Feb 6

Explore the amazing properties of mirrors and lenses, and discover all the wonderful images and colorful patterns you get when angles and symmetry come into play. Design and build your own unique kaleidoscope.

Energy Transformers

MON Feb 12 / TUES Feb 13

Explore different forms of energy! Investigate how these forms are converted from one to another. Experiment with “Newton’s Cradles” and build wind turbines that produce electricity.

Roller Coaster Bonanza

MON Feb 19 /TUES Feb 20

Put your engineering skills to work as you use triangles to design a roller coaster for marbles. Can you create a loop-de-loop?

Mystery Mixtures

MON Feb 26 / TUES Feb 27

From forensics to fireworks, chemists learn about interesting substances by performing various tests. Using chemical analysis and powers of observation, participants will each determine the composition of a mystery mixture. Chemical reactions, suspensions, solutions, and mixtures are all part of this mysterious exploration.

Sticky Stuff

MON Mar 4/ TUES Mar 5

Have you noticed that strange thing called “adhesion” that makes your fingers sticky after you eat candy? Discover what kinds of materials will make paper, plastic, fabric, and wood “stick together,” and which will not.

Looking Up Close

MON Mar 11 / TUES Mar 12

Use microscopes and magnifiers to discover the fascinating world of organisms and elements among us! Explore the structures and functions of a variety of interesting features among a micro-world of bugs, plants, and rocks.

Acids and Bases

MON Mar 18/ TUES Mar 19

We use acids and bases every day. What’s the difference? We'll find out as we prepare an acid-base indicator and compare the relative strengths of some common acids and bases.

In Contrast

MON Mar 25 /TUES Mar 26

Let's become “sensitive” to light! Experiment with black-and-white photographic paper, penlights, and photo chemicals to create abstract drawings and prints with light.

Gravity Rules

MON Apr 8 / TUES Apr 9

Do heavier objects fall faster than lighter objects? Investigate the force of gravity by balancing unusually shaped objects and experimenting with their centers of gravity.

Water on the Move

MON Apr 15/ TUES Apr 16

How does water move through the soil? Be a water engineer as you design, build, and test aquifer models to track contaminants, water tables, and well levels.

Dirt, Dig it!

MON Apr 22  /TUES Apr 23

What is dirt? Who needs it? Dig in the dirt to discover who and what is in it. Then, make a newspaper pot in which to grow your own plant.
