In Growing a Scientist™, preschoolers ages 2½ to 5 and their parents or adult caregivers make discoveries about science by questioning, experiencing, and investigating. Early childhood educators engage children and their adults in science and engineering activities that incorporate art, literature, and fun! Each session focuses on a different theme. Activities change each semester. Following the program, enjoy a snack together.

Become a curious chemist when you mix up cool concoctions, investigate foamy foods, and pour bubbling solutions!

Experiment with the strength of cones, create art with loops and circles, and be an architect with cylinders and domes.

Investigate magnets and other items they attract and repel a variety of materials. Try magnetic painting and adding “fur” to animal pictures with magnets. Decorate and take home your own magnetic maze.

Experiment with spinning and twirling, looping and whirling. Make your own spinning tops and twirly birds to take home.

Celebrate our amazing bodies from our fingerprints to our hearts and bones! Conduct experiments and create a body mural to illustrate your insides.

What did the “three little pigs” learn about structure? You’ll become an architect and builder as you experiment with a variety of shapes and materials to test for strength and stability.

Watch insects in action, discover how many legs insects have, and find out what they eat. Create your own insect house for a live insect.
Explora’s Clubs & Programs
Explora educators develop activities with children’s developmental levels in mind. Your children will have the opportunity to learn from, and work with older and younger peers and make new friends.

Be an inquisitive scientist as you concoct new substances. Investigate their characteristics as you first observe them, and then manipulate them with your hands.

Investigate how air interacts with materials to make them float and fly. Experiment with floating balloons, make simple gliding toys, and construct your own kite.
Fruit or Veggie?

We’ll dissect different fruits and vegetables to find out what’s inside. Then, we’ll make colorful fruit and vegetable prints to take home, assemble our own snacks, and more!

Roll up your sleeves and explore the world of sand and rocks. Sort rocks, examine sand from around the world, and create sand sculptures.

Separate light into the color spectrum and experience the colors that make up rainbows. Use a variety of items to find rainbows and enjoy a colorful snack.
On a Roll

Observe and compare rolling systems using recycled materials, cups, and marbles. Test which shapes roll the best and create a roller coaster for marbles.
Floaters and Sinkers

Roll up your sleeves and experiment with fruits, vegetables, and other solids to classify them as floaters or sinkers. We’ll modify materials to make them float or sink, and design a foil boat to carry a cargo of pennies. How many pennies will your boat hold before it sinks?

Explore each of your five senses as you feel different textures, match pairs of scents, trick your eyes with illusions, identify mysterious sounds, and more.

Explore patterns in nature, create a variety of symmetrical and repeating designs, and make your own patchwork quilt pattern.
