What is your job and for whom do you work?

I’m a Data Analyst for Fidelity Investments within the Compliance Department. Our team takes big data and creates visualizations that help the business make decisions that impact the company’s future.

What math skills are most helpful to you in your work?

We use different forms of math depending on the project we’re working on. Sometimes it’s simple things like addition and subtraction with a little multiplication and division. The other times we’re calculating standard deviations and running more complex calculations. Since math is a subject that builds on itself, the little things definitely add up!

What has helped you be successful in math?

Patience and persistence!! I used to get so frustrated when I didn’t understand a concept right away! Having patience with myself and the persistence to keep going definitely helped me to succeed! It was also helpful to have a group of friends during high school, college, and during my master’s program to work through classes and concepts I struggled with.

What advice do you have for parents about math?

Math is such an integral part of our lives. We use math while following recipes, calculating how much gas we will need on a road trip or event getting us through the week, etc. Include your kids in the day-to-day math you do without even thinking about it, so they know what they’re learning in school is useful. and of course, always be their biggest cheerleader, regardless of the subject!
