Spring Camp 2020

For Grades Pre-K–8

Camps spark learning during school breaks through investigation and discovery.

Monday, March 30 – Friday, April 3

Camps are single day camps. Sign up for as many days as you like! Each grade range will have its own unique investigations to keep imaginations active with science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM).

Pre-K half-day camps:

  • Hours: 9am-noon
  • Registration fee per child, per day:
    • Explora members $45
    • Non-members $50

K-6th grade full-day camps:

  • Hours: 9am-4pm
  • Registration fee per child, per day:

Tech Girls! Day Camp, Grades 4-8

Tuesday, March 31, 9am–noon

Edible Science: Experiment with science you can eat. Discover what makes dough rise, test foods to see if they are acids or bases, and test a recipe.

Wednesday, April 1, 9am–noon

Plants and Seeds: Discover the origin of a plant by dissecting a seed and finding out what makes it grow. Investigate seeds, soils, and roots. Take your plantings home and watch them grow!

Thursday, April 2, 9am–noon

Music Makers: Explore sounds and vibrations through simple everyday materials. Make musical instruments with recycled materials .Explore how to create different vibrations and sounds.

Friday, April 3, 9am–noon

Balloon Science: Explore propulsion and force as you experiment with balloons. Build a balloon-powered car, get a balloon to balance in mid-air, and much more.

Light & Shadow: Discover ways to create shadows as you investigate light by bouncing and bending it. You’ll explore shadow shapes, experiment with colored shadows, and make shadow puppets.

OR

Under Construction: What did the “three little pigs” learn about structure? Students become architects and builders as they experiment with a variety of shapes and materials to test for strength and stability.

Playful Pendulums: Explore pendulums and chaotic motion. Create a pendulum that draws in the sand, one that paints, and much more. Experiment with changing pendulum variables, such as weight of the bob, location of the weight, length of the pendulum, etc and see what happens!

Tuesday, March 31, 9am–4pm

Push & Pull: Explore how air and water can transfer energy, and how this energy can be directed to move objects. Experiment with hydraulic and pneumatic power to generate work such as lifting an elevator, moving a car, or making a rocket fly

Wednesday, April 1, 9am–4pm

Scientific Pranksters: It’s April 1st and we all know what that means! It’s time to experiment with pranks, jokes, and tricks. Together we will explore and test the phenomena – and science – of practical joking.

Thursday, April 2, 9am–4pm

From the Ground Up: Experiment with proportion, scale, and architectural design. Design a structure, construct your design using recycled materials, and wire it for electricity!

Friday, April 3, 9am–4pm

Air and Water Resistance: Explore the concept of resistance with both air and water.Can you create a parachute that lands gently? How can you make your zipline plane fly  faster? Design, test, and then adjust your designs to minimize and maximize resistance.

Eggciting Chemistry: Expand your knowledge of chemical reactions, cooking techniques, and recipes in this action packed, egg-filled camp. Find new ways to prepare, process, and enjoy these tasty everyday proteins.

Explora CSI: Delve into forensic science as we inquire, investigate, and interrogate as we gather “evidence.” Explore the science behind fingerprints, bitemarks, DNA and more. What do you think happened? Explore to know more.

Wednesday, April 1, 9am–4pm

Scientific Pranksters: It’s April 1st and we all know what that means! It’s time to experiment with pranks, jokes, and tricks. Together we will explore and test the phenomena—and science—of practical joking.

Thursday, April 2, 9am–4pm

The Science of Magic: Magic often fools our senses. Investigate phenomena that seem like magic, but can be explained by science. Learn how to apply math to create tricks that will wow your friends!

Friday, April 3, 9am–4pm

Applicable Automata: What are automata? What do they do? In this camp you will become the designer and developer of your very own mechanical automation!. Decide on a function, then experiment to create the right motions you are looking for. What will your creation do?

Tech Girls! for Grades 4-8

Thursday, April 2, 9am–4pm

Tech Girls!: ~ Be inspired and empowered! ~   Become a tech creator, not just a user, during this special coding program. Learn to code, use Micro:bits, create wearable technology, and design your own project to address real-world problems. Add to your programming skills, no matter your current experience level. No programming experience is required.

Brick by Brick What makes a structure strong? Come explore a variety of materials and designs to construct different types of structures.

Explora’s Camp Best Practices of Be Safe, Be Kind, and Be Curious as well as general camp policies, including independent toileting, apply to this camp. After registration, the Camp Manager will be in contact to request additional information in order to best support each camper. Subject to change before registration begins for these camps.

  • Drop Off: Anytime between 8:45-9 am.
  • Before care: (Extra option), beginning at 8 am.
  • Activities: Classroom activities as described, plus exhibit exploration.
  • Food: Please pack morning & afternoon peanut-free snacks and lunch as appropriate.
  • Break time: Outside on the Explora playground, weather permitting.
  • Pick-up: 12 pm for Pre-K and 4 pm for for K-6th grade. Adults will be asked to show photo ID at pick-up.
  • After care: (Extra option) for K-6th, 4-5:30 pm.

Explora educators develop camp activities with children’s developmental levels in mind. Your children will have the opportunity to learn from, and work with older and younger peers and make new friends.

Spring Camp Fees

Pre-K

  • $45 for Explora members;
  • $50 for non-members.

K-6th graders

  • $85 for Explora members;
  • $95 for non-members.
Registration
  • All campers must be able to use the restroom on their own.
  • Please have the following available when you register: emergency contact name and phone numbers; name of alternate adults who can pick up the child; child’s medications, dosages, and physician’s name; child’s insurance information, as well as any allergy or special needs information for your child.

Cancellation Policy
  • If a cancellation is received more than 5 business days before the camp, a refund will be issued for the amount minus a 15% administrative fee.
  • Cancellations received 5 business days or fewer before the camp will not be refunded.
  • Full fees will be refunded if Explora cancels a program
