Home School Explorations Series for grades K-2 (ages 5-7)

Be curious, discover, experiment!

Explora’s Home School Explorations Series offers your child a semester of weekly, hour-long experiential science, technology, and art programs. Each Exploration is facilitated by Explora educators. These are hour-long, materials-rich classes that actively engage every child in inquiry activities. In these classes, children will make discoveries in science, technology, engineering, art, and math through questioning, experiencing, and investigating. Children will be encouraged to build their own knowledge and cultivate skills such as observation, creativity, critical thinking, cooperative learning, communication, and innovation as they explore a different topic each week.

Fall 2019 Explorations Schedule

Acids or Bases

9/16 or 9/17
Explore natural acid/base indicators such as red cabbage, black tea, grape juice and turmeric. We’ll watch their colors change as we mix these indicators with acids and bases. We’ll also use them to draw color-changing pictures.

Creepy Crawly Bugs

9/23 or 9/24
Slithering, crawling, wiggling, and squirming. From beetles, to worms, to snails, dig into the world of these creatures. Create your own worm farm, and more!

How Does Your Garden Grow

9/30 or 10/1
Get your hands dirty as you examine, compare and contrast different seeds, dissect lima beans and fruit, and plant seeds and flowers to take home.

Looking for a Pattern

10/7 or 10/8
Investigate patterns in nature, discover designs in animal footprints, experiment with rhythm patterns, and create your own design on a big hat you can wear.

Balancing Act

10/14 or 10/15
Can you balance on one foot? Test out your sense of balance as you explore counter balance and center of gravity. Make a balanced art project to take home.

Adventures in Space

10/21 or 10/22
Be an astronomer and explore the moon, planets, and beyond! Make your own asteroid, experiment with gravity, and create moon craters.

Floaters and Sinkers

10/28 or 10/29
Roll up your sleeves and experiment with fruits, vegetables, and other solids to classify them as floaters or sinkers. We’ll modify materials to make them float or sink, and design a foil boat to carry a cargo of pennies. How many pennies will your boat hold before it sinks?

On a Roll

11/4 or 11/5
Observe and compare rolling systems using recycled materials, cups, and marbles. Test which shapes roll the best and create a roller coaster for marbles.

Color Mix-Up

11/11 or 11/12
Watch colors change before your eyes as you mix colored solutions, make secondary colors from primary ones, and create artwork to take home.

Rocks Rock

11/18 or 11/19
Use magnifying loupes to examine a variety of rocks and crystals. Compare rocks as to how they are the same and different. Experiment to find if any of the rocks roll or fizz or float. Then make your own rock prints.

Discovering Triangles

11/25 or 11/26
It’s time to give triangles the attention they deserve! Where can you find different kinds of triangles being used? Discover their importance as you use triangles to build three-dimensional objects and begin to explore the perimeters and areas of these shapes.

Our Amazing Bodies

12/2 or 12/3
Celebrate our amazing bodies from our fingerprints to our hearts and bones! Test the strengths of bones, discover the uniqueness of your fingerprint, explore how germs spread, and more!
