Join us for discovery and investigation!

June 5-August 11, 2017

Fill the summer with explorations of rocks, worms, light, color, cooking, our senses, and storytelling in these camps for children who have completed grades 2 or 3.

Select a morning, afternoon, or one of each to make a full day of camp.

All-Day Camp (9am-4p) – 5 full days:  $260 Explora members • $300 Non-members

Morning (9am-noon) – 5 half days:  $130 Explora members • $150 Non-members

Afternoon Camp (1-4pm) – 5 half days:  $130 Explora members • $150 Non-members

Add Before or After Camp Care (optional): Times: 8-9am and/or 4-5:30pm, $5 per child, per morning or afternoon

The following is a list of Explora Summer Camp for children in grades 2-3. The grade refers to the highest grades level completed.

Week 1:  June 5-9

Morning Classes

2nd-3rd – Pinball Wizard:  Design a pinball game out of a variety of materials. Experiment with building and testing pins, traps, bumpers, guardrails, and more.

Afternoon Class

2nd-3rd – Ready, Set, Create!  Experience art-making for the entire body! From painting to sculpture, we will explore new ways of artistic expression with action, motion, and gesture.


Week 2 –  June 12-16

Morning Class

2nd-3rd – Our Five Senses:  Investigate how our senses work, how we use them to explore the world, and maybe even how we can trick them!

Afternoon Class

2nd-3rd – Color:  What is color? Is it always the same? Discover how color combines and changes its appearance. Use different materials and media to explore the properties of color and create your own color illusions!


Week 3:  June 19-23

Morning Class

2nd-3rd – Soaring High:  What keeps gliders in the air so long? You’ll use everyday materials to design, build and test gliders and other lightweight flying objects that use air to stay aloft.

Afternoon Class

2nd-3rd – Whales to Worms:  Delve into the Kingdom called Animalia! Make discoveries about extreme life cycles, design a “home sweet home” for a particular creature, and work with living samples to observe their behaviors.


Week 4:  June 26-30

Morning Class

2nd-3rd – Complex Simple Machines:  Learn about the properties of simple machines. Save Rapunzel from her tower, build a marble run, and create your own complex systems using these neat tools called simple machines.

Afternoon Classes

2nd-3rd – Stories Coded in Cloth – Science Storytelling:  Kids, become a storytelling star in this workshop led by a professional storyteller! Make your experiences with and ideas about science come alive as you refine your skills for sharing experiences and connecting with your audience. We’ll explore ancient and modern communications using mud, rock, and cloth. Curious? Join our camp and get muddy! The final day we’ll share our adventures with a presentation/performance for parents.UETF_color_lg

2nd-3rd – Geology Rocks:  Unearth the marvels of geology as you experiment with a variety of materials to make “lava” flow, explore rocks that fizz, float, or glow, and identify mystery rocks and minerals.

Week 5:  July 10-14

Morning Classes

2nd-3rd – Crazy Light:  Did you know that light can be bounced and bent? Use lenses, mirrors, prisms, and filters to explore the wonderful properties of light and optics.

Afternoon Class

2nd-3rd – Complex Simple Machines:  Come learn the foundational and complex properties of simple machines. Save Rapunzel from her tower, build a marble run, and create your own complex systems using these neat tools called simple machines!


Week 9:  August 7-11

Morning Class

2nd-3rd – Water, Water Everywhere:  Cool off at Explora as you experiment with siphon water systems, design water clocks, explore liquid density, and build “aquaterriums.”

Afternoon Class

2nd-3rd – Geology Rocks:  Unearth the marvels of geology as you experiment with a variety of materials to make “lava” flow, explore rocks that fizz, float, or glow, and identify mystery rocks and minerals.

Summer Camp
Registration Info

  • Drop Off: Anytime between 8:45-9 am.
  • Before care: (Extra option), beginning at 8 am.
  • Activities: Classroom activities as described, plus exhibit exploration.
  • Food: Please pack morning & afternoon peanut-free snacks and lunch as appropriate.
  • Break time: Outside on the Explora playground, weather permitting.
  • Pick-up: 12 pm for morning camp and 4 pm afternoon or full day camp. Adults will be asked to show photo ID at pick-up.
  • After care: (Extra option) for K-8, 4-5:30 pm.

Explora educators develop camp activities with children’s developmental levels in mind. Your children will have the opportunity to learn from, and work with older and younger peers and make new friends.

Summer Camp Fees

Half Day Camps

  • $130 for Explora members;
  • $150 for non-members.


Full Day Camps

  • $260 for Explora members;
  • $300 for non-members.
  • Some camps have greater costs due to materials.
Registration
  • All campers must be able to use the restroom on their own.
  • Please have the following available when you register: emergency contact name and phone numbers; name of alternate adults who can pick up the child; child’s medications, dosages, and physician’s name; child’s insurance information, as well as any allergy or special needs information for your child.

  • If a cancelation is received at least 5 business days before the camp, a refund will be issued for the amount minus a 15% administration fee.
  • Cancelations received fewer than 5 business days before the camp will not be refunded.
  • Full fees will be refunded if Explora cancels a program.
