Explora’s Youth Intern Program involves high school students in a three-year internship during which they experience an engaging approach to learning and become educators in their community.
Interns spend an initial 12 weeks in orientation and basic job training, learning about Explora. They participate in transactive educational experiences in science, technology, and art with Explora’s professional educators and staff. During this training period, the youth interns also assist on the exhibit floor. They develop resumes and prepare for interviews in order to apply for a paid internship position.
At this level youth interns become paid, part-time employees of Explora. The youth interns receive training in Explora teaching methods and provide community service by facilitating Explora’s educational programs for elementary school children. The youth interns are matched with Explora staff members who support the intern’s job performance and help with college selection, application, and exploration of potential careers.
During the summer months, youth interns are encouraged to work as paid assistants in our summer classes. They assist Explora’s educators in facilitating programs, with demonstrations, visitor services on Explora’s exhibit floor and participate in outreach events.
