Other Workshops You Can Schedule

Enliven your joy of learning and teaching, and build new skills to use in your classroom.

Workshops are two hours in length, and listed alphabetically.

Attractive Magnets

Early Childhood Teacher & Provider Workshop – Continuing Education Units available.
They repel, they attract! Experiment with which items are attracted to magnets and which are not. Investigate the properties and behaviors of magnets and create your own magnet.

Color-liscious

Early Childhood Teacher & Provider Workshop – Continuing Education Units available.
Combining colors can yield surprising results. What happens when you mix pigments? What happens when you mix colored light? Learn to use chromatography to separate colors and find the hidden colors in everyday objects such as markers and coated candies.

Creative Strategies for Implementing NGSS Science and Engineering Practices

Gain useful and engaging strategies for achieving many of the Common Core and cross-disciplinary Science and Engineering Practices presented in the Next Generation Science Standards. We also will explore ways in which these Practices can be meaningfully integrated into existing classroom curricula.

Curiosity Sparks Learning

Experience firsthand the motivation and curiosity generated by discrepant events–events that challenge our everyday assumptions and create doubt that leads from curiosity to investigation.

Discovery-based Learning

What is inquiry, really? Spark your students’ desire to know and understand by creating problem-solving situations in which students interact with, explore, and manipulate their environment. We’ll discuss and practice the roles of questions, suggestions, and inference in inquiry, and we’ll model how teachers can integrate inquiry into existing curriculum.

Doorknobs & Broomsticks: Discovering Simple Machines

Early Childhood Teacher & Provider Workshop – Continuing Education Units available.
Compare and contrast conveyors, belts, scissors, shovels, Ferris wheels, car jacks, and grasshopper legs. Learn to facilitate experiments with simple machines such as inclined planes, pulleys, levers and screws to explore how simple machines in our everyday life make work easier.

Easy, Breezy: A Gust of Air

Early Childhood Teacher & Provider Workshop – Continuing Education Units available.
Have you ever marveled at the air around you? Can you make a ball levitate? Can you make an egg jump from one container to the next? You’ll experiment with the power of air as you discover how airplanes fly and birds soar. You’ll also learn techniques for making and testing hot air balloons in the classroom!

Get it to Balance

Early Childhood Teacher & Provider Workshop – Continuing Education Units available.
What can you get to balance? Explore balance, movement, and design by constructing sculptures in the style of Alexander Calder’s mobiles. We will compare and contrast symmetry and asymmetry in design and weight, and explore cause and effect by trying to balance weights and physically work out visual choices.

Ice Ball Inquiry

Pursuing our own curiosity is at the heart of learning and being human, and being able to skillfully facilitate students’ scientific investigation in vital to developing 21st Century Skills. Through the use of suggestion, tools, and questions, participants will experience the power of the inquiry process.

Rocks Rock!

Early Childhood Teacher & Provider Workshop – Continuing Education Units available.
How do you capture that natural curiosity about rocks and turn it into a deeper experience of discovery? We’ll use microscopes and magnifying loupes to examine a variety of rocks. Discover the main types of rocks, model the rock cycle, and perform a series of tests to unearth a mystery mineral. Create your own rock prints and examine crystals.

Rollin’, Rollin’, Rollin

Early Childhood Teacher & Provider Workshop – Continuing Education Units available.
Have a ball as you observe and compare rolling systems using recycled everyday materials, from cups and containers to balls and marbles. Play with flexible tracks and a variety of balls, as you make discoveries about the effect of mass and weight on collisions, and the ways to affect velocity or speed. What does rolling science look like for our youngest children?

Science Fairs and Beyond: Strategies for Successful Projects

The key to a successful science fair project is combining the correct use of scientific practice with an innovative idea. This workshop provides you with the skills and tools to help your students ask great questions, make predictions, and design and execute the type of project judges are looking for: those that showcase a student’s ability to independently conduct and communicate original, meaningful science or engineering research.

The World of Plants

Early Childhood Teacher & Provider Workshop – Continuing Education Units available.
Investigate plants from the roots up. How do plants eat? Investigate a variety of seeds, dissect one and find out what makes it grow. How do some plants reproduce without seeds? Come find out as we investigate the world of plants.

Water Wonders

Early Childhood Teacher & Provider Workshop – Continuing Education Units available.
We will get our hands wet as we make discoveries about water. Experiment with absorption, adhesion, and surface tension. What discoveries can you make about plain water versus salt water? How many drops of water can you fit on a penny? Can you get a water drop to race down a hill?
