Spring Camp 2018

Camps spark learning during school breaks through investigation and discovery.
Registration is now open!
Monday, March 26 – Friday, March 30

Camps are single day camps. Sign up for as many days as you like! Each grade range will have its own unique investigations to keep imaginations active with science, technology, engineering, math, and art.

Camp Info:

Pre-K half-day camps:

  • Hours: 9am-noon (aftercare unavailable for half-day camps)
  • Registration fee per child, per day:
    • Explora members $30
    • Non-members $40

K-6th grade full-day camps:

  • Hours: 9am-4pm
  • Registration fee per child, per day:
    • Explora members $60
    • Non-members $80

Add Before or After Camp Care (optional): Times: 8-9am and/or 4-5:30pm $5 per child, per morning or afternoon

A-MAZE-ing Camp:  Up or down? Under or over? Discover mapping and coding.

Tuesday, March 27, 9am-noon

Tool Time:  Righty tighty; lefty loosey. Explore tools and simple machines that help make our  jobs easier!

Wednesday, March 28, 9am-noon

Ball Bonanza:  Balls that bounce and roll; balls that are smooth and knobby. Explore balls and how they move!

Thursday, March 29, 9am-noon

Color Mix-up:  Red and Blue make… what? Discover color mixing and take home a masterpiece.

Friday, March 30, 9am-noon

Music that Moves You:  Explore sound, vibration, and music while making musical instruments to take home.

Camp Schedule for Grades K-1

K-1 full-day camps will include both of the topics listed, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Based on enrollment, the camp may be divided into two sections. If you have a camp buddy/friend request, please email campcoordinator@explora.us.

Monday, March 26, 9am-4pm

Color-Go-Round:  Paint will twirl, whirl, and fly as you explore the science of circular motion through artistic creation. Experiment with viscosity, flow, and modifiers in this colorful camp.

Fun with Polymers:  How strong is a plastic bag? How much water can a diaper hold? Explore some of the properties and many uses of synthetic polymers such as plastic.

Tuesday, March 27, 9am-4pm

Let’s Get Cooking:  How many tablespoons does it take to make 1/4 cup? How many pints are in a gallon? Discover the math that helps you in the kitchen as you make a tasty snack!

Rocks Rock:  What are rocks made of?  How are they formed? Do they make good pets? Can they be used in art? Investigate the  properties of a variety of rocks.

Wednesday, March 28, 9am-4pm

Bugs All Around:  What does a bug look like? Insects and other arthropods (bugs) are the most common and plentiful life form on earth. Investigate these numerous and varied animals.

Liquid Wonders:  How many drops of water or oil can you fit on top of a penny? Explore the world of liquids as you experiment with surface tension, mix and layer different liquids, compare viscosity, and more.

Thursday, March 29, 9am-4pm

Bubble Mania:  Have some soapy fun as you use a variety of materials to experiment with bubble-blowing. Test bubble wands of different shapes and create bubble art.

Under the Microscope:  What do your skin, hair, and everyday objects look like when magnified? Find out as you take a close-up look at the world around you.

Friday, March 30, 9am-4pm

Amazing Bodies:  Head, shoulders, knees, toes – plus skin, bones, lungs, and more. Join us for this investigation of our amazing bodies.

Science on Ice:  It can be wet or dry; it can come as a block or a flake; and, under special circumstances, it can be a delicious dessert! Explore the world of ice and the science behind it.

Tuesday, March 27, 9am-4pm

Spinning Round:  Do learning and play make the world go around, or do we learn and play as the world goes round? Play and experiment with circular motion.

Wednesday, March 28, 9am-4pm

Open World Engineering:  Explore, engineer, craft, and create as we bring the world of Minecraft into real life. We will build our world, craft our tools, and explore our environment. What you create, and how you do it will be up to you! Campers will use MinecraftEDU accounts on the Explora server instead of any personal Minecraft accounts. Note: Minecraft is a Trademark of Mojang AB. This camp is not an official Minecraft product nor is it approved by or associated with Mojang.

Water in the Wild:  Water plays a powerful role in any ecosystem, especially at the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge. Learn the connections among people, animals, and water at this special natural area. Note: This camp will require an additional transportation release which will be sent to you after registration.

Engineering Workshop:  Are you up for the challenge? Use your creativity and skills to complete engineering design challenges that include hungry alligators, species relocation, and more.

Mini Escape/Puzzle Room:  Put your puzzle-solving skills to the test as we go through some of the puzzles, ciphers, and challenges that go into escape rooms around the world. Build your own puzzle challenges to challenge your family and friends!

Tuesday, March 27, 9am-4pm

Hot Tamale! Spicy Science:  Red or green? We’ll look closely at everyone’s favorite chile peppers: green chile, red chile, jalapeño, bell pepper, and many others. Experiment with what makes something spicy, extract red pigment for paint, test for vitamin C, and learn about the Scoville Heat Units.

Thursday, March 29, 9am-4pm

Something’s Fishy:  Can we all fish in the pond? Explore the concepts of sustainability. Where does our food come from? How do our actions impact our ecosystem? Learn about bees, gardens, and solar lights.

Friday, March 30, 9am-4pm

Explore the science behind carnival attractions, including balloon games, roller coasters, balancing acts, and more. This camp is designed for campers, ages 5-8, on the autism spectrum. Explora’s Camp Best Practices of Be Safe, Be Kind, and Be Curious as well as general camp policies, including independent toileting, apply to this camp. After registration, the Camp Manager will be in contact to request additional information in order to best support each camper. If you have questions about this camp, please contact the Camp Manager at (505) 224-8381 prior to registering.

  • Before care: (Extra option), beginning at 8 am.
  • Activities: Classroom activities as described, plus exhibit exploration.
  • Food: Please pack morning & afternoon peanut-free snacks and lunch as appropriate.
  • Break time: Outside on the Explora playground, weather permitting.
  • Pick-up: 12 pm for Pre-K and 4 pm for for K-6th grade. Adults will be asked to show photo ID at pick-up.
  • After care: (Extra option) for K-6th, 4-5:30 pm.

Explora educators develop camp activities with children’s developmental levels in mind. Your children will have the opportunity to learn from, and work with older and younger peers and make new friends.
