Chain Reaction Scientists

science-to-grow-on-main

A science club for 3rd-5th graders
Spring Semester 2015
January 17 to May 9
Saturdays, 9:30 am – 11:00 am

Build a better scientist!

Chain Reaction Scientists delve into the nature of physics and engineering through motion and change. Problem-solving skills are sharpened as participants work to connect separate actions into a running sequence. Meets every other week. Parents are welcome to participate.

Class Fees:
Explora Members- $140.00
Non-members- $160.00

Button-Chain-Sat-930am form
Meets every other Saturday morning, 9:30 - 11 am

Class Schedule:

roller coasters!
Saturday, January 17
With just paper and tape, design a roller coaster that sends a marble flying down hills, around loops and corkscrews, over jumps, and on… until it ends up at your goal, queasy but unhurt.

the ways and means
Saturday, January 31
Not sure where to start?  Chain reactions behaving badly?  Learn some ways to get an idea and the means to make it happen.

Energy - Charge and release
Saturday, February 14
Chain reactions are all about storing energy, then releasing it one component at a time! Discover different ways to lock energy away, and design mechanisms to let it go!

systems
Saturday, Febuary 28
Ever wonder how an engine turns a spinning axle into the up and down motion of a piston? A linked cam can help! Build a system with pins, belts, and gears to make the connection!

Challenge Day!
Saturday, March 14
We’re halfway through the semester and it’s time to test your chain-building skills.  Complete as many chain challenges as you can before time’s up!

circuit city
Saturday, March 28
Electricity likes circles. Make them or break them using magnetically-connected circuit blocks to power your chain reaction.

chemistry
Saturday, April 11
Chemical reactions are chain reactions on the molecular level, in a sense—use them to push, pressurize, block, or support your chain reaction.

patterns
Saturday, April 25
You’ve seen a line of dominoes fall, but have you ever toppled a 3D structure of dominoes?  Did you know if you weave craft sticks just right, they can explode along a wave? Use patterns to make common items act in amazing ways!

THE GRAND FINALE
Saturday, May 9
Eight weeks of testing and refining, learning how to engineer forces to do our bidding upon a wacky mix of objects, have brought our Chain Reaction Scientists to their final big reaction in this series!

Activities change each semester.
