Chain Reaction Scientists

A science club for 3rd-5th graders
Fall Semester 2014
Aug. 15  to Dec. 6

science-to-grow-on-main

Chain Reaction Scientists will delve into the nature of physics and chemistry through motion and change. Problem-solving skills are sharpened as participants work to connect separate actions into a running sequence. Each session meets every other week. Parents are welcome to participate.

Registration fees:

Build a better scientist!

Class Schedule:

MAGNETS
Fri., Aug. 15; Sat., Aug. 16
Can you feel the attraction, or are you repelled by the idea?  Make your chain reaction move in unexpected ways using the invisible force of magnetism.

PENDULUMS
Fri., Aug. 29; Sat., Aug. 30
Get in the swing of things by discovering the properties of pendulums.  What makes them tick?  How can you use this knowledge to keep your chain going?

PRESSURE
Fri., Sept. 12; Sat., Sept. 13

Feel the power of air: it’s pushing on you all the time!  Pump up the pressure as you use air to move objects.

SPINNING
Fri., Sept. 26; Sat., Sept. 27

Round and round it goes; where it stops, you control! Spin up strange shapes to catch some attention with your chain reaction!

ROBOTS!

Fri., Oct. 10; Sat., Oct. 11
001010100010100100010011, am I right?  Learn to program a LEGO® Mindstorms™ robot to react to your chain reaction and move it along!

WATER

Fri., Oct. 24; Sat., Oct. 25
From shipping goods downriver to making hydrodynamic power, water has always been used as a powerful force.  Harness this power to make your chain reaction really flow.

HOT AND COLD

Fri., Nov. 7; Sat., Nov. 8
You’re getting warmer, warmer, cold!  Add or remove heat to melt, flash freeze, or burn through your chain reaction.

LIGHT

Fri., Nov. 21; Sat., Nov. 22
How fast can a chain reaction go?  Shed some light on the situation using lasers and light sensors.  Push your reaction to the speed of light!

THE GRAND FINALE

Fri., Dec. 5; Sat., Dec. 6
Eight weeks of strange components, powers of nature, and robotic engineering have brought our Chain Reaction Scientists to their greatest experiment!
